Half-heart padlocks are uniquely shaped and named for their distinct form; viewed from the side they partially resemble half of a heart. These locks date from the late 1600’s–early 1800’s. Half-heart padlocks have no internal mechanism and instead rely on the key to compress springs on the end of the shackle which retain it in the lock. This particular padlock features two springs (some half-heart padlocks employ four). Another feature of these locks is the retaining wire. This serves to keep the shackle paired with the lock so it cannot be lost. It also ensures that the shackle cannot be inserted backwards as improper placement would spoil the lock. This lock has been given a dark antiqued patina and coated with wax for protection.
