My first book, Basic Handmade Padlock, outlined a riveted body construction padlock. It laid out the ground work for making a late eighteenth century–early nineteenth century English/American single-bolt type padlock. A lot of these construction techniques cross over to various other types of locks. This follow-up book is a continuation to build upon what was covered while adding in the next levels of complexity. The main padlock covered in this book, a half-heart padlock, is of a brazed body construction. Brazing is a widely used technique within traditional locksmithing and has many useful applications throughout metalworking.

Stepping up the difficulty, this book discusses making a basic hollow stem single-piece key. These keys are appropriate for the single-bolt padlock or for a two-chamber padlock, of similar design, briefly outlined in this book. Building on the skills of forging a single-piece key, this book also outlines a process to fabricate a key for the half-heart padlock. Accompanying the production of keys, there is also a section on basic wards.

This book is intended for seasoned individuals. In an effort to keep the focus on the production of the lock, the assumption was made that the reader of this book has spent some time in the forge and has a good understanding of the processes and tools, as to avoid having to explain all details of how to forge.
